In my opinion, the best toothbrush is the one you enjoy using.

Seriously, a good electric toothbrush will almost always be my favorite compared to a traditional toothbrush. Of course, if you can effectively remove plaque with a manual toothbrush, I don’t see the need to buy an electric one. Your dentist or dental hygienist can certainly assess this better during a check-up.

If you're used to a traditional toothbrush, aren't convinced by an electric toothbrush for some reason, or are just considering buying one, here are some practical tips on how to brush your teeth effectively with a manual toothbrush.

The Proper Brushing Technique: Clean Your Teeth Gently and Effectively

  • Make sure you're brushing correctly. Whether you use a traditional or electric toothbrush, you can effectively remove plaque, which is responsible for oral health issues.

  • It’s important to apply the correct brushing technique, especially if you’re using a traditional toothbrush.

  • Hold the toothbrush bristles at a 45-degree angle to your gum line, never perpendicular!

  • Use gentle circular motions, never scrub! Scrubbing can damage the gums.

  • Don’t press too hard; bent bristles can irritate the gums and lead to gum recession.

  • Use soft bristles! Even if it feels like they aren’t cleaning your teeth thoroughly, trust that they are designed and tested to effectively remove plaque without damaging your gums.

  • Again: gentle and without pressure on the gums!

  • Scrubbing is only allowed on the chewing surfaces.

  • Remember to brush at least twice daily, in the morning and evening, for 2 minutes each time.

How to Achieve the Right Technique

Be sure to use a timer, such as the one on your phone, and brush each time following the same routine. Personally, I usually start on the upper right side for 30 seconds (10 seconds for the sides near the cheek, 10 seconds for the sides near the palate, and 10 seconds for the chewing surfaces), then move to the upper left side for 30 seconds, and so on.

Whether you use a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush, the goal is the same: effective and proper cleaning of your teeth to remove plaque.

The challenge is that traditional toothbrushes require a different brushing technique compared to electric toothbrushes. It’s important to understand these differences and consciously use the correct technique for cleaning your teeth, regardless of the type of toothbrush you use.
