How to Brush Properly with an Electric Toothbrush

Electric toothbrushes are great because they do the work for you. Depending on the type of electric toothbrush you have, a specific brushing technique is required. There are some key aspects to pay attention to, such as how you hold and guide the brush, as well as the angle at which the toothbrush is held.

The Most Important Tips for Proper Brushing with an Electric Toothbrush:

  • Don’t scrub horizontally from left to right!

  • With electric toothbrushes, let the brush do all the work – your job is simply to guide the brush correctly over the tooth surfaces.

  • Don’t press the brush down; hold it gently, as if you were holding a pen.

  • Make sure the brush touches both the gum and the teeth.

  • Remember each surface: the sides (cheek/lips), the middle (palate/tongue), and the chewing surface.

  • Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.

  • Electric toothbrushes usually give an audible signal every 30 seconds.

  • Always brush in the same order. I usually start with the upper right side for 30 seconds (10 seconds for the cheek surface, 10 seconds for the palate surface, and 10 seconds for the chewing surfaces), then move to the upper left side, and so on.

  • Remember to hold the toothbrush in one position for a few seconds, then move it to the next tooth – the brush does the rest.

  • Don’t press the toothbrush against the teeth.

  • Brush at least twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, for 2 minutes each time.
